David Bell, University of Stirling and Centre for Population Change
This seminar is concerned with recent trends in mortality in Scotland. It develops the recent discussion of this issue at the International Public Policy Institute at the University of Strathclyde, which in turn was motivated by the work of Anne Case and Sir Angus Deaton on trends in mortality in the USA. It will begin by reviewing Case and Deaton, highlighting some of the criticisms of this work. It will then go on to examine recent changes in mortality in Scotland exploring the notion that increases in life expectancy have slowed down since the Great Recession. This will be analysed from a number of perspectives including causes of death, geography etc. and will conclude with a discussion of potential policy implications.
