Last week two members of CPC were promoted to the role of Professor at the University of Southampton. Dr Corrado Giulietti has been promoted to Professor of Economics and Dr Athina Vlachantoni has been promoted to Professor of Gerontology and Social Policy. Corrado has also been appointed as Head of Department for Economics.
Corrado’s research focuses on the study of labour and development economics, with a particular focus on the effects of migration. He works within the ‘migration and mobility’ strand of CPC and is also Director of the China Research Centre. He is currently Research Director of the Global Labor Organization and Associate Editor of the Journal of Population Economics. After being awarded a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton, he held several positions at the Institute for Labor Economics (IZA) in Bonn, Germany, before returning to the UK in 2016.
He said: “I am excited about continuing my academic journey as Professor and (incoming) Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Southampton. I very much look forward to continuing my close collaboration and involvement with CPC.”
Athina’s work broadly combines the areas of ageing, gender and social policy, and she works within the ‘longer lives’ and ‘intergenerational exchange’ strands of CPC. She was awarded a PhD in Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science and, following her role as lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Southampton, she joined the Centre for Research on Ageing and Department of Gerontology in 2008 as a lecturer in Gerontology. Athina is also a member of the Council of the British Society of Population Studies, a member of the ESRC Peer Review College, Deputy Editor of Ageing & Society, and Deputy Director (Impact and Collaboration) in the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership.
She comments: “Well, now the real work starts! More seriously, I am genuinely excited to continue working with and learning from excellent colleagues who truly inspire me.”
CPC Director, Jane Falkingham, said: “I am delighted to see Corrado and Athina receive their Professorial promotions, and to welcome Corrado as Head of Department for Economics. I congratulate them on their tremendous achievement and wish them all success into the future.”
